They call him The Kid, or Baby Thatcher, but unlike the Iron Lady, Guy Verhofstadt is an unapologetic Euro enthusiast, a true believer in a federal Europe. The former Belgium prime minister has even written a book called the United States of Europe, and is seen as the great white hope of the movement for greater integration. Although he was unceremoniously booted out of power in national elections last year, Belgians have almost become nostalgic for his nine years at the top thanks to governmental chaos since.
His Flemish Liberal Democrat party is rising steadily in the polls, and there is even talk of The Kid (now 56) taking over from Jose Manuel Barroso as president of the European Commission.
