Elena Basescu, Romania

By Fiachra Gibbons/RFI

The cocktail of sex, celebrity and politics does not get more explosive than in Romania, where the daughter of President Traian Basescu has been dubbed the Paris Hilton of the Carpathians. The 28-year-old former model first began to raise eyebrows when she cemented her own amorous alliance with the son of the leader of the Social Democratic Party, her father's coalition partners.

Their beautiful relationship soon crumbled, however, although that has not stopped the Bucharest socialite's climb up the political ladder, using family connections and Facebook and Twitter to build up her base. Although she was originally a member of her father's Liberal Democrat party, she decided to leave to run as an independent for the European elections.

While the Romanian press have not missed an opportunity to point out how unsuited for office she is, Daddy has been busy defending her in any way he can. He insisted that she has even been to university... though he didn't say for how long. You can be sure that this real-life Romanian soap opera is going to run and run...
